“Life is a matter of choices and every choice you make makes you.” John Maxwell’s quote is one of my favorites because it reminds me that every moment, the choice is before me for good or evil, life or death. The choice I make will determine whether I am blessed or cursed, according to Deuteronomy 30:15-19.
In the case of abortion, I think it is. When we refuse to stand for life and make a conscious decision to avoid controversy by remaining silent, we are in fact, choosing to let our silence support abortion. If this sounds harsh, let me give some rationale before you throw me out.
If scripture is true, which I am one of those who believe it is, then God is creator of all things and created man (and woman) in His image as His crowning creation to have dominion over the earth and all that is on it. It is God who places every baby in the womb, uniquely knit together by His hand for a purpose, reflecting an individual aspect of Him as no one else can. This means that in the kingdom of God there are NO UNPLANNED PREGNANCIES. I believe every “unplanned pregnancy” is actually a sovereign act of God’s grace on a woman’s life to give her the opportunity to make a choice for life and be blessed.
Jesus says He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)……the only way to God our Father, and that if we deny Him, He will deny us. (Matthew 10:33) Though I am not a Bible scholar, the very Spirit of God lives within me, leading me to all truth, and I am coming to believe that those of us, who are called by the name “Christian”, after having accepted Christ as Savior and Lord, are held to a higher standard than those who have not. (Luke 12:48) Therefore, we are called to stand for righteousness, walk in peace, and speak truth in love.
Abortion is murder of an innocent child created in the image of God. To remain silent on this issue is to lend weight to the pro-abortion platform, whether we mean to or not. We cannot straddle the fence. Jesus said if we are lukewarm, we will be spit out of His mouth! (Revelation 3:16) Proverbs 31:8-9 says we are to speak for those destined to destruction. It is NOT a suggestion.
At the clinic, we see how our indifference causes abortion on a regular basis. When we tell a young woman in an unplanned pregnancy that we support whatever she decides, we are in fact; leaving her with the full weight of that choice and in most cases, the sheer weight of her uncertainty will lead to abortion. However, when we offer to walk with her on the journey and support her through her pregnancy, she feels empowered to allow her maternal instincts to take over and chooses to carry her baby to term.
Looking at it from another angle, let’s look at Luke 10. When the Priest walked by the beaten man, he was silent. When the Levite walked by, he was as well. However, when the despised Samaritan saw the man in trouble, he bound up his wounds, carried him to the inn, and even paid the innkeeper to care for him. Jesus said go and do like the Samaritan. We know the unborn are being slaughtered every minute of every day, every day of every year since 1973 when they were proclaimed “non human” and consequently, not covered by the Constitution of this once great land.
Hundreds of thousands of individuals are standing in the gap for these precious image bearers everyday in pregnancy centers and other life affirming organizations. These warriors are not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, nor are they ashamed to stand for LIFE. What about you? Will your “I don’t believe in abortion, but I cannot tell anyone else what to do” attitude be acceptable when you stand before Christ?
My prayer for all God’s children is that we wake up and stand up, letting the light of Christ shine so this world will know there is a God Whose will will be done on earth as in heaven!
